London win again, and a double victory for Neuss  10.1.2024

The top division final between Wuppertal was very close. In the handicap games, the London players were white on all three boards and only Alain Cheung won his game, Ryan Sun and Yilin Su got 2 points for Wuppertal. In the even games, Shizhao Li managed to avenge his defeat against Alain but the other two games went to London so the final score was 3-3. London won on tiebreak because they won more of the even games. This is exactly what happened in the previous edition of the league, so Wuppertal are very unluckly to lose this way twice in a row. Well done to the London team of Alain Cheung, Scott Cobbold and Gene Wong - and their captain Chiu Wong.

The other two divisions were both successes for the teams from Neuss. In the second division, Neuss Family Xu won 4-2 against Kaarst and in the third division Neuss won 5-1 against Poland. Well done to both the Neuss teams and their captain Ying Cheng.

Another London v Wuppertal final!  17.12.2023

London were 3-1 down against Sengoku Bishkek in their semi final match, leaving Alain Cheung the task of winning both his games in order for his team to progress to the final on tiebreak (most even games won in the match). But Alain won by resignation in each game so we have a London v Wuppertal final again, a repeat of the final in the last City League!

So the full list of final matches is:
Division 1: London v Wuppertal
Division 2: Neuss Fmaily Xu v Kaarst
Division 3: Neuss v Poland
Second semi-final in the balance after two games  10.12.2023

The second semi-final in Division 1, between Sengoku Bishkek and London, is tied at 1-1 after the games between Ernur Emiliev (ernur) and Scott Cobbold (mismo) were played earlier today. The handicap game was very close with Ernur winning by 3 points in the end. Scott won the even game by resignation.

In the remaining games, Ilim Baratbaev (ilim) will play Alain Cheung (alainfc), and Danay Aytaliev (Vladika) will play Gene Wong (gene).
One Semi-Final and Three Finals to go!  9.12.2023

In Division 1, Wuppertal won their semi-final 4-2 against Bilimkana Kant. Their opponents will be the winners of the match London v Sengoku Bishkek which will take place partly on 10 December and partly on the following weekend. It is still possible that the final could be a repeat of last time's close and exciting London v Wuppertal match which the London team won on tiebreak after a 3-3 draw.

The Division 2 final will be between Neuss Family Xu and Kaarst. Kaarst beat their nearest rivals Mettmann to finish with 5 straight wins. Neuss Family Xu ended their group stages matches with a win over Edinburgh; this means they had four wins and a draw with Cambridge B.

Neuss completed a clean sweep of 5 wins in Division 3 and in the final they will play Poland who finished on 9 points after 4 wins and a draw with Solingen in the first round.

The league tables have all been updated and now show the final positions. All three finals are scheduled to be played in January.
Division 1 reaches semi-final stage  28.11.2023

The Division 1 semifinalists are now known. Last time's finalists London and Wuppertal have both reached the semi-finals again. Both will play against teams from Kyrgyzstan. London will play Sengoku Bishkek (a repeat of one of the group games); Sengoku Bishkek drew 3-3 with Cambridge A but won on tiebreak (more even games won). Wuppertal will play Bilimkana Kant.

In Division 2 the favourites to be in the final would appear to be Neuss Family Xu and Kaarst but at this point Cambridge B could still overtake Neuss Family Xu, and Mettmann could leapfrog Kaarst if they win their match against them in Round 5.

In Division 3 Neuss are certain to be one of the finalists, they will play against either Poland or Solingen.
Fourth round underway!  21.11.2023

A couple of games have already been played in the fourth round, with most due to take place on Tuesday (22 November).

The first division enters its knockout phase, the group results have been used to provide the seedings. The top seeds are London and Wuppertal (who were the finalists in the previous edition of the City League). The first match to start was Cambridge A v Sengoku Bishkek, and this is already very close with the score at 2-2 after 4 games played.

In the second division, Kaarst are the clear leaders in the second group with 3 wins, while in the other group it's close between Cambridge B and Neuss Family Xu who drew in round 3.

In the third division, Neuss are the clear leaders in the first group with 3 straight wins, while in the other group it's close between Solingen and Poland who drew in the first round.

Unfortunately Team Serbia are unable to play in Rounds 4 and 5 so instead there will be a Cambridge E team playing in these 2 rounds in the third division.
Euro City Youth Go League second round complete  31.10.2023

The second round of the competition is now complete. Once again almost all the games were played successfully, there were very few defaults.

In the first division, reigning champions London lead one group with four points, while in the other group Cambridge A and Wuppertal drew so they both have three points.

In the second division, Cambridge B and Neuss Family Xu are on top in the first group, they have both won both of their matches so far. In the other group Kaarst lead with Istanbul Go Masters in second place.

In the third division, the first group is topped by Dusseldorf C and Neuss who have won two matches each. In the second group, Solingen and Poland who drew with each other in the first round, both have three points so far.
Euro City Youth Go League first round complete  16.10.2023

The first round of the Euro City Youth Go League went very smoothly, considering that this is a new format of the competition and is being played on an entirely new Go server. Of the 84 scheduled games, 71 were played by the default date and 8 were finished later.

A few games were played with the wrong settings, in 3 cases the results was affected by using a wrong komi and the results of these games have been corrected.

In the top division, Cambridge A and reigning champions London lead the two groups, both had 5-1 victories. There were also wins for Wuppertal (runners-up last time) and Sengoku Bishkek.

In the second division, there were wins Neuss Family Xu, Kaarst, Dusseldorf A and Cambridge B. In the third division the first round winners were Dusseldorf B, Dusseldorf C, Neuss and Cambridge C.
Euro City Youth Go League 2023/24 launched  8.10.2023

Entries closed for the 3rd edition of the Euro City Youth Go League. There will be 28 teams, most representing cities, clubs or schools in European countries.

The website for the competition is live and the new Go server on playstrategy.org that will be used for the event has been thoroughly tested and some reported bugs have been fixed.

The first round matches will by default take place on Tuesday 10th October, although a few games have been rescheduled by agreement between the captains.

Thanks to all the captains for arranging their teams and good luck to everyone!

Important dates:
  • Registration of teams takes place until: 30th September 2023
  • First match preferred date: 10th October 2023
  • Finals preferred date: 9th January 2024

System / Rules:

There will be 3 divisions. In the first division the first three games will be played in groups to determine seedings for the quarter finals. Round 4 will be the quarter final and Round 5 the semi final; the two semi final winners will meet in the final. In divisions 2 and 3, teams will play all the other teams in their group and one from the other group; then the top team from each group will meet in the final.

Games will be played on 13x13 boards on playstrategy.org - many thanks to Matt Tucker and James Heppell from the MSO for all their help in getting the server ready for us.

  • A city, club or local area in Europe can have a team of youth players. All players must be aged under 18 on 31 August 2023.
  • If a country has not enough youth players for city teams, a whole country team will be allowed so long as it is not a strong team (average strength under 15-kyu)
  • A team consists of 3-6 amateur players
  • It is also possible to have a squad from which the players are selected for several teams for the same city/club
  • If there is a squad list, then players don't necessarily always play for the same team, but in any match all the A team players must be stronger than all B team players etc.
  • In each match, three players of each team play, they must be selected in order of strength (not necessarily the EGF rank).
  • The team captain (most usually an adult who does not play in the team himself) will be in charge of coordinating their team and of communicating with the project leaders and the tournament manager.
  • Undos should only be requested in rare circumstances. The opponent is free to accept or refuse the undo.
Games:
  • In each round of matches, each player will play two games against the corresponding player from the other team
  • The first game will be played with full handicap (see table below), the second with even game (6 points komi, colours decided randomly using the black/white circle icon)
  • Black (the weaker player) should issue the challenge in the first (handicap) game; the other player should issue the challenge in the second (even) game
  • If the players are the same grade, they should play two even games (6 komi), the second one with colours reversed
  • If the score in any game is even, it is a jigo (not white win). If any match finishes 3-3 it is a tie
  • Games will be played with 10 minutes + 5 seconds Fischer time (called "Fischer Clock" in the UK version of playstrategy.org and "Real Time" in the US version)
  • We use Chinese style "area" counting, this is currently the only rule set available on playstrategy.org
Tiebreaks:
  • League positions are determined by (1) Match points (2) Game points (3) SOS (4) The head to head game between the tied teams
  • In a tied match, the team winning most even games wins, if the teams won one even game each and one is a tie then the team winning the higher board wins
Finals / Round 5:
  • A player is only eligible to play for a team in the finals if they played for that team (or a lower team of the same multi-team squad) in the earlier part of the season.
  • In a multi-team squad, if the top team(s) of the squad are in Div 1, then the players from those teams are not eligible to play for a lower team in the squad in Round 5 unless they already played for the lower team earlier in the season.
You can find the detailed rules here. Where people have asked questions about the rules, we have tried to clarify here on the website.
